[1] Overview
==============================================================================
Namco's Klonoa Beach Volley (a.k.a. Klonoa Beach Volleyball) is a
beach volleyball game that stars the characters from the Klonoa series.
They include Klonoa and various main protagonists and antagonists from
Door to Phantomile, Sekai ga Nozonda Wasuremono (a.k.a. Lunatea's Veil),
Yumemiru Teikoku (a.k.a. Empire of Dreams), Dream Champ Tournament, and
Klonoa Heroes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.1] Story
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fate, for once, goes easy on Klonoa, the legendary Dream Traveler. As a
brief respite from his unenviable fate, he now finds himself among friends
as well as enemies from adventures past in a beach volleyball championship.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.2] Characters
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.2.1] Playable Characters
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Klonoa, the Dream Traveler
A pure dream who exists to restore peace and balance to realms in need.
Although he cannot fly, Klonoa's affinity with the wind allows him to defy
gravity temporarily by flapping his large ears. His origins are a mystery,
but a large, gold ring with a green gem can always be found with him. This
artifact, called the Wind Ring, is useless by itself, but if a being of
sufficient magical power occupies it, Klonoa can use it to fire Wind Bullets.
Klonoa is a curious child who doesn't know when to give up. He enjoys
playing around, but he can be extremely fierce against those who threaten
to harm the innocent. He suffers from hydrophobia, and he cannot swim.
In this game, Klonoa is a strong player with his high attacking power
and decent speed. He is a good choice for any match.
Chipple, a Boxer
A young boxer hailing from Ghazzaland who wishes to become the greatest
fighting champion of all time. He is known to have at least one brother.
Chipple, despite his lofty goal, is an easy-going lad who doesn't mind
kicking back from time to time. During periods of training, though, he can
grow quite competitive and will even start picking fights with warriors
who far outmatch him (often with disastrous consequences).
In this game, Chipple is a hard-hitting but very slow player, and his
receiving skill is the lowest (along with Joka's and Gantz's).
Lolo, a Priestess of Claire
A young and gentle servant of the Goddess Claire from the world of Lunatea.
Lolo may not seem like much at first, but she is one of the few persons
other than Huepow who carries the magical strength to allow Klonoa to fire
Wind Bullets.
Pure-hearted and optimistic by nature, Lolo is often willing to help those
in need, and she is very close to Popka. She is also afraid of ghosts for
some reason.
In this game, Lolo is a defensive player with very high blocking skill
and the greatest receiving skill, but she has very low attacking power.
Popka, a Familiar
Lolo's puppet-like companion. Popka has a limited ability to fly, and
he can give powerful "Popka Boosts" to his friends (which can save Klonoa
from ill-timed jumps).
Popka may be pushy and rough around the edges, but deep down he cares
greatly for his friends. While he often scolds Lolo for her apparent
idiocy, he treats her as a dear sister and will do anything to protect
her from harm. When enraged, he has the unfortunate habit of extending
his claws and threatening to use them violently.
In this game, Popka is a very light player, with the greatest speed
but unimpressive defensive power, and his blocking skill is the lowest.
His Super Attack is a variant of his Popka Boost.
Leorina, a Sky Pirate
A Sky Pirate from Lunatea who initially exploited Lolo and Klonoa's efforts
so she could further her own plans. Eventually, she and Ta't parted with
Klonoa on more or less friendly terms.
Leorina is a brilliant if ambitious engineer and leader. She builds
all of her own vessels and other machines, and she prefers to let her
constructs carry out her tasks instead of getting her own hands dirty.
Highly confident of her own abilities, Leorina does not like to show
weakness, although she seems to enjoy Ta't's constant companionship.
(Currently she also seems to like using her technical skills for more
constructive and humanitarian purposes.)
In this game, Leorina is a defensive player, but with much higher feinting
skill and far less receiving skill than Lolo. While her attacking power is
the lowest (along with Ta't's), her blocking skill is the greatest.
Ta't, a Familiar
Leorina's puppet-like companion. Ta't is a pilot and an agile pickpocket,
and she helps out in all of Leorina's schemes. Ta't has the ability to split
herself into two copies: one white, and one black. Despite their difference
in color, both copies appear to have equal abilities. The copies can work
independently of each other, and they can merge back together at any time.
Ta't always behaves friendly, but she is seldom a friend, except to
Leorina, by whose side she never fails to stay close. Ta't likes to toy
around with her opponents, but her overly playful nature sometimes becomes
detrimental to her and Leorina's plans.
In this game, Ta't is a light player who compared to Popka has less
attacking power but greater blocking and receiving skills. Her attacking
power is the lowest (along with Leorina's).
Joka, a Fiend
A servant of Ghadious, the Dark Spirit. Joka looks like a bumbling fool on
the surface, but beneath his guise lies a vicious demon.
Joka's comical appearance belies his homicidal tendencies. He fashions
himself as a gentleman, even as he stumbles about and hits multiple snags
in his plans. Oddly enough, he is adamantly loyal to his master and spends
much of his time attempting to prove himself a worthy servant.
In this game, Joka is just a clown and a silly oddball, minus his
psychopathic aspects. He has the greatest feinting skill but the lowest
receiving skill.
Heart Moo, a Representative of the Moos
A round, red creature whose kind seems to appear in every dream realm.
Mostly harmless, Moos often find themselves being captured and tossed
around by Klonoa as he races through their worlds and does battle with
the forces of darkness. Some Moos also wear flimsy suits of armor or
wield stubby lances and shields in a vain attempt to stop Klonoa. But
this particular Moo has an extra amount of initiative. Having learnt
how to play volleyball, he decides to enter the tournament for fun
and maybe even prove that he and others like him don't form the lowest
rung of the dream realms' social ladder.
Heart Moo is a clueless little fellow who doesn't know fear, because,
well, he is a freaking Moo. Always relaxed, he doesn't mind working with
anyone else, as long as he has a good time. However, he should not be
underestimated. Although he cannot say any word other than "Moo," behind
that adorable face of his lies a frighteningly competent volleyball virtuoso.
In this game, Heart Moo is a balanced player who does not have any
particular strengths or weaknesses, and he should make a solid partner
for virtually any other character.
Nahatomb, the Nightmare
An ancient and powerful being of darkness.
Nahatomb, being a living nightmare, embodies the forces of darkness and
destruction. He has only one drive, and that is to bring ruin and death to
all that he touches.
In this game, Nahatomb is a big purple dinosaur, instead of a terrifying
cosmic horror. Smoking a big cigar, wearing a classy bow tie, living in
a lavishly adorned palace filled with extravagant riches, and behaving
arrogantly toward everyone else, he is in every way the stereotypical
fat, snobby billionaire bastard. Hosting the Championship with Garlen,
he is a heavy player with very high attacking power but the lowest speed.
Gantz, the Golden Killer
A bounty hunter who wields big weapons, including a rocket launcher and a
custom bright orange Namco GunCon.
Gantz is cool-headed and highly skilled, the trademarks of the ideal
soldier of fortune. Proficient with a wide range of weapons, he has rather
high perceptions of himself and tends to look down upon others. There are
reasons for his actions, though, and he appears to be driven by the loss
of someone close to him.
In this game, Gantz is hired by Garlen to help the hosts win the
Championship. Stooping down to playing volleyball just so he can make
a buck (which is as low as John Smith from Namco's Outfoxies will go),
Gantz is an extremely heavy player with the greatest attacking power
but the lowest feinting and receiving skills.
Garlen, an Engineer
A master engineer who prides himself in constructing war machines that
are assembled from the best materials.
Garlen is an egomaniac who wants to crush all of his opponents and show
the world that his creations are the ultimate achievements in engineering.
He operates his own vehicles, which he uses to carry out his dirty work.
In this game, Garlen is a host of the Championship. He is a strong player
with above-average ratings across all of the attributes, except for his
speed, which is only slightly lower than average.
Super Garlen
A cybernetically enhanced version of Garlen. He still pilots his hovering
machine.
Super Garlen is just Garlen, but even more driven and fanatical about
his work.
In this game, Super Garlen is the most powerful player overall.
He has nearly maximum ratings across most of the attributes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.2.2] Non-Playable Characters
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Huepow, a Wind Spirit
A friend and playmate of Klonoa. Various legends of Klonoa describe Huepow
somewhat differently. In many tales he is merely a spirit who lives inside
the Wind Ring, allowing Klonoa to fire Wind Bullets. In others he is
actually a member of a royal family. In his wind spirit form, Huepow
appears to be a floating blue ball with a face and hands, while in his
"true" form, he appears to be a Caulkman (a race of hooded beings from
Namco's Valkyrie series).
Huepow seems playful and happy like his furry companion, but that only
masks his true maturity. Huepow is the dearest person to Klonoa, and the
two remain close, regardless of the rather unfriendly things that Huepow
may have been forced to perform upon Klonoa.
In this game, Huepow serves as an impartial referee. He simply observes
the matches and makes the appropriate calls.
Balue, a Mason and a Very Horny Old Man
The mason at the village of Breezegale.
Balue is a gruff but highly skilled craftsman. He particularly treats
Klonoa like a little boy who should stay out of "adult business." Balue
is also obsessed with Lephise, a songstress gifted with the power to
rejuvenate worlds.
In this game, Balue only appears in one of the characters' endings. He acts
as his usual self, and he will provide plenty of grief to that character.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.3] Playing the Game
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Volleyball is not that difficult to play. The players have to knock the
ball with their hands over the net and into the opposing team's half of
the court. In Klonoa Beach Volley, a team scores if the ball either lands
within the opposing team's half of the court or is knocked out of bounds
by the opposing team.
Of course, Klonoa Beach Volley stars nonhuman characters, so the gameplay
here is a little different from conventional volleyball. The characters can
use their special powers in conjunction with their shots. These types of
shots are known as Super Attacks, and they can help the teams score multiple
Points at a time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.3.1] Normal Controls
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With the normal controls, a Player can use an entire Controller.
Movement Stick (Left Stick) - Move and aim. The player will run in the
direction pressed (relative to the screen) and aim the ball (toward the
section of the half of the court corresponding to the direction pressed).
The farther this is pressed, the faster the movement.
Movement Pad (D-Pad) - Move and aim.
Receive Button (X) - Receive or toss. Hold a direction while pressing this
to aim the ball toward the corresponding section of the team's half of
the court.
Attack Button (Square) - Attack, block, feint, or serve. Hold a direction
while pressing this to aim the ball toward the corresponding section of
the opposing team's half of the court. To perform a spike, hit the ball
at the peak of a jump. On the Character Select Screen, press this to
randomly choose a character.
Super Attack Button (Circle) - Super Attack. Super Attacks are similar to
regular attacks, but they can help the team score multiple Points at once.
Special Action A Button (R1) - Perform the first special action.
Special actions are only for show.
Special Action B Button (R2) - Perform the second special action.
Special Action C Button (Triangle) - Perform the third special action.
On the Character Select Screen, press this to change the outfit of the
highlighted character. On the Team Setup Screen, press this to change
sides of the court, if doing so is allowed.
Replay Button (Select) - Enable Replay (if the Automatic Replay option is
set to Off). This will enable Replay for the next Point that is scored.
On the Character Select Screen, press this to display the stats of the
highlighted character.
Pause Button (Start) - Pause, and access the Pause Screen. To reset the game,
press L1, R1, L2, R2, Select, and Start together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.3.2] Shared Controls
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With the shared controls ("friend" type), two Players can share a DualShock.
This setup allows 4 Players to participate with two DualShocks, which is a
great option for those who do not have a MultiTap.
Left-Side Player:
Movement Stick (Left Stick) - Move and aim.
Receive Button (L2) - Receive or toss.
Attack Button (L1) - Attack, block, feint, or serve.
Super Attack Button (D-Pad Left) - Super Attack.
Special Action A Button (D-Pad Right) - Perform the first special action.
Special Action B Button (D-Pad Down) - Perform the second special action.
Special Action C Button (D-Pad Up) - Perform the third special action.
Right-Side Player:
Movement Stick (Right Stick) - Move and aim.
Receive Button (R2) - Receive or toss.
Attack Button (R1) - Attack, block, feint, or serve.
Super Attack Button (Circle) - Super Attack.
Special Action A Button (Square) - Perform the first special action.
Special Action B Button (X) - Perform the second special action.
Special Action C Button (Triangle) - Perform the third special action.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.3.3] Super Attacks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To enable a Super Attack, a team must complete at least one row on the
Super Attack Panel, which is the three-by-three grid displayed near the
upper corners of the screen. The Panel marks the sections of the opponents'
half of the court in which the team has successfully scored. (Each section
corresponds to a direction pressed.) When a row of three sections is
highlighted, the team may use a Super Attack.
If the team scores successfully with a Super Attack, it will gain multiple
Points. Each highlighted row equals an additional Point that can be gained.
This means for one highlighted row, the team can gain 2 Points, and for
eight highlighted rows (when the entire Panel is highlighted), the team
can gain 9 Points. Once a team performs a Super Attack, all highlighted
rows will be reset, so the team will have to complete at least one row
again before it can use another Super Attack.
If a Super Attack is successfully intercepted (no matter if it's received,
blocked, or countered with a direct attack), it will revert back to a normal
attack after a while. A Super Attack can backfire on the team that performs
it if the ball hits the net and falls onto that team's own half of the court.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.3.4] Player Attributes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The attribute ratings range from 0.5 units, which is lowest, to 4.0 units,
which is highest.
Attack - How hard the character hits the ball. The higher this attribute,
the tougher the character's direct attacks are to catch.
Block - How well the character blocks. The higher this attribute, the
more easily the character blocks the ball when jumping up near the net.
Feint - How well the character feints. The higher this attribute,
the tougher the character's feints (bounced shots) are to catch.
Receive - How well the character receives. The higher this attribute,
the more easily the character catches the ball.
Speed - How fast the character moves. The higher this attribute,
the more quickly the character runs.
"Difficulty" - How tough playing as the character supposedly is.
This attribute is rather arbitrary and should not really influence
anyone's decision to play as the character.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.4] Option Screen
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Load - Restore the Save File from the Memory Card (Slot 1).
Save - Record the Save File onto the Memory Card (Slot 1).
Screen - Adjust the centering of the screen. Press the D-Pad to move it.
Press Circle to accept it. Press X to cancel it. Press Square to reset
it to the default setting.
Sound - Adjust the audio output. The default setting is Stereo,
but this may be changed to Monaural.
Vibration - Adjust the vibration setting. The default setting is On,
but this may be changed to Off.
Replay - Adjust the Automatic Replay setting. The default setting is On,
but this may be changed to Off.
Return - Exit to the Title Screen.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.5] Setup Screens
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.5.1] Character Select Screen
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A team cannot consist of clones of the same character, but opposing teams
can each have a clone of the same character. For example, a team consisting
of Klonoa and Klonoa is not allowed, but there can be a team consisting of
Klonoa and Lolo playing against a team consisting of Klonoa and Popka.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.5.2] Court Select Screen
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While the gameplay is essentially the same across all courts, each court
comes with different scenery and music. There are 7 courts total, including
the two extra courts, which must be earned before they become available.
Beach (Resort Court)
This court is the typical setting for any beach volleyball game.
Nice tropical tune.
Wind Village Court
This court is located at Breezegale, the village where Balue lives.
The tune is The Windmill Song from Door to Phantomile.
Jungle Court
This court is set up at Forlock Forest, which lies not far from Breezegale.
If the ball goes out of the court, it will splash into the water and float.
The tune seems to be a heavily remixed version of the Forlock Twist from
Door to Phantomile.
Sunset Beach
This court is found at the edges of a dried sea. The tune has a
Wild West-like style to it.
Nahatomb's Palace
This court is placed in the main hall of Nahatomb's home. The suspenseful
tune goes nicely with the final match, which will take place here.
Christmas Court
This court lies in a winter wonderland decked with snowmen, trees wrapped
with bright lights, and other colorful ornaments. The festive tune is
fitting of the season.
Highland Court
This court is placed on top of a rocky peak at some highlands, where active
volcanoes periodically erupt. If the ball goes out of the court, it will
fall down into the distant valley. The tune is a remix of Baladium's Drive
from Door to Phantomile.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.5.3] Match Options Screen
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some options must be earned before they become available.
Game Start - Begin the match.
Set Count - The number of sets (how many rounds possible within a match).
The default setting is 1, but this may be changed to 3 or 5.
Match Point - The number of Points needed to win a match. The default setting
is 10, but this may be changed to 5, 15, 20, or 30.
COM Level - The skill level (Difficulty Level) of the computer Players.
The default setting is 2, but this may be changed to 1 (less skilled),
3 (more skilled), or Super (extremely skilled).
COM Assist - The degree of computer assistance given to a team. The default
setting is Off, but this may be changed to minor computer aid or major
computer aid (where you only need to aim the ball, because the receiving,
tossing, and attacking will be automatic).
Game Speed - The game speed. The default setting is Normal, but this may be
changed to Slow, Fast, or Turbo.
Ball - The ball used. The default setting is Moo (regular yellow ball),
but this may be changed to Sasamie (large ball), Boomie (explosive ball),
Mini Moo (small yellow ball), Burnie (silly sound ball), Glibz (tiny
ball), or Elbil (shrinking ball). The Boomie ball will explode after
a while. Having it when it blows up is equivalent to missing.
Character Size - The size of the characters. The default setting is Normal,
but this may be changed to Large or Small.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.6] Results Screen
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the end of a match, the Scores of both teams and data regarding
each player are displayed on the Results Screen. The numbers of attacks,
Super Attacks, feints, blocks, serves, and misses are shown. Players with
the best performances will receive the most valuable player (MVP) title.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.7] General Tips
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Forming a team with players whose strengths cover for one another's
weaknesses is a solid tactic. For example, with a Klonoa and Popka team,
Klonoa can do the attacking while Popka can catch any shots that are
too fast and far away for Klonoa to reach.
- Teams specializing in certain attributes can be equally, if not more,
effective. For example, with a Ta't and Popka team, both members can quickly
catch shots aimed at anywhere in their half of the court, and they can make
fast, rapid strikes. Their offensive and defensive powers will be low, but
they still stand a good chance of winning if they can use their speed to
outmaneuver their opponents.
- There are only two members per team in standard beach volleyball, and that
means no team can completely cover its entire half of the court at any given
instance. The members of your team should spread themselves evenly across
their own half of the court, so they generally have less distance to cover
when they are intercepting shots from the opposing team. Bunching up both
players at one side is usually not a good idea.
- A team's chances of scoring is slightly higher with spikes, which are
performed when a character smashes the ball as it reaches the peak of
its flight. Because spikes are so much faster, players have less time
to catch them. Aimed and timed properly, spikes can be extremely effective.
- If the opposing team bounces the ball over the net and your player is near
it, having your player quickly leap up and spike the ball back will result
in an almost guaranteed Point. However, if your player is far from the net
and if the angle at which your player spikes the ball is too shallow, the
ball may hit the net and drop onto your own team's half of the court.
- More highlighted rows on the Super Attack Panel mean more potential extra
Points, so a team should try to score against its opponents in different
sections of the court. Sometimes, if the ball lands between two different
sections, both corresponding sections on the Super Attack Panel will become
highlighted, which can help the team gain Super Attacks faster.
- When performing a Super Attack, aim it at the sections farthest away from
the opposing players. Spiked Super Attacks are very fast and difficult to
catch.
- Completing rows on the Panel should not take very high priority, especially
against advanced opponents. Don't rely only on Super Attacks to defeat the
opponents, because standard shots can be as effective at winning a match.
- If it's Game Over (in Championship Mode), your team may continue by
restarting from the match where it has been defeated. There are infinite
Credits, but continuing will reduce the Rank.

[2] Strategies
==============================================================================
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.1] Training Mode
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are playing the game for the first time and try to enter
Championship Mode or Exhibition Mode, the game will prompt you
to go through Training Mode first.
In Training Mode, Klonoa will guide you through the basics of the game.
Klonoa and Lolo are in Team A, and Ta't and Chipple are in Team B.
In each Lesson, Klonoa will demonstrate a certain maneuver, and then
you get to take control of him and repeat the same maneuver.
The Pause Screen in this Mode has three options: Cancel, Skip Lesson,
and Return to the Title Screen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.1.1] Lesson 1: Serving
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Press the Attack Button to toss the ball upward, and then press the Button
again to hit the ball when it comes back down.
To pass this Lesson, make three successful serves without messing up
five times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.1.2] Lesson 2: Serving and Aiming
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Serve the ball as usual, but this time aim it toward the green circular
marker. Be sure to hold the appropriate direction when hitting the ball
to properly aim it.
To pass this Lesson, make five successfully aimed serves without messing up
five times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.1.3] Lesson 3: Receiving
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Press the Receive Button to catch the ball when the opposing team knocks it
over the net. The section toward which the ball is aimed will be highlighted
with a green X marker.
To pass this Lesson, make five successful receives without messing up
five times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.1.4] Lesson 4: Tossing and Attacking
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Press the Receive Button to toss, and press the Attack Button to attack.
Working with the teammate (Lolo), receive the ball from the opposing team,
toss it, and then attack. Again, the section of the court toward which the
ball is aimed will be determined by the direction pressed.
To pass this Lesson, make three successful receive-toss-attack sequences
without messing up five times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.1.5] Lesson 5: Super Attack
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First, enable a Super Attack. Complete a row on the Super Attack Panel by
scoring in the different sections of the opposing team's half of the court.
Then, when the ball is ready to be hit, press the Super Attack Button to
perform the Super Attack.
To pass this Lesson, make one successful Super Attack without messing up
five times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.1.6] Other Actions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A receive attack is knocking the ball back to the opposing team after
receiving it, without tossing it back to the partner. This move can
catch inattentive opponents off guard, but it is often not much more
effective than the usual receive-toss-attack sequence.
A direct attack is knocking the ball back to the opposing team as
it comes over the net, without even receiving it. This move can be
particularly effective as long as your players can hit the ball at
an angle that won't cause it to become snagged by the net.
A block is reflecting the opposing team's attack by jumping up near the
net. This move is risky because your players can miss the ball if they
mistime their jumps, but it can earn them a quick Point if it succeeds.
A feint is bouncing the ball over the net to the opposing team, instead
of making a straight attack. When feinting, the ball is usually aimed at
the sections adjacent to the net. This move can be used to trick opponents
who are hanging back and expecting your players to spike.
A four hit is the same team receiving the ball and then tossing it
between its members more than once. Four hits are bad, and performing
one is equivalent to missing.
A dribble is the same person hitting the ball twice in a row.
Dribbles are bad, and performing one is equivalent to missing.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.2] Championship Mode
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Championship Mode, your team plays against a series of five
computer-controlled teams. There are three Difficulty Levels.
1 is the easiest, 2 is moderate, and 3 is the toughest.
The Match Point is always 10.
The Pause Screen in this Mode has three options: Cancel, Retry Match,
and Return to the Title Screen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.2.1] Match 1: Beach (Resort Court)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With sunny skies overhead and a fresh breeze blowing in from the sea,
the court at this sandy resort is the classic location for a beach
volleyball game. The swaying palm trees provide comfortable shade,
and the small red crab-like creatures observe the participants from
the sides. The Championship posters (complete with the Moo image)
are also flapping in the pleasant weather.
Regardless of the Difficulty Level, the opposing team here should not be
very tough to defeat. This is a good place to warm up for the later matches.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.2.2] Match 2: Wind Village Court
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If Klonoa had a true home other than the void, it would be Breezegale.
The court is located on a grassy field, within view of the great windmills
of this peaceful and quiet little village.
The opposing team here will put up more of a fight than the previous one.
They will attack and defend with reasonable, if not impressive, skill.
If possible, use a Super Attack to score several Points at once.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.2.3] Match 3: Jungle Court
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The lands near Breezegale are decorated with a dazzling blanket of
exotic flora. The court has been set up next to a gentle waterfall
where furry creatures occasionally swing by on vines.
Now things will really start heating up. The opposing team won't be a
pushover, especially on a Difficulty Level of 2 or 3. Prevent the opponents
from building up Super Attacks, or else they may quickly win the match by
scoring several Points at a time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.2.4] Match 4: Sunset Beach
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The court is at the edges of a dried sea, where a derelict ship lies
resting on its side.
Gantz and Garlen will always form the opposing team in this match. Both of
them are rather slow, but they pack some serious offensive power. Watch out
for their spikes and Super Attacks. Gantz, besides being the slower of the
pair, also has weaker defensive skills, so he is less likely to catch the
ball than Garlen. Have trouble winning this match? Wait for the opponents
to feint (by bouncing the ball up over the net), and then make a direct
attack (by spiking the ball back immediately).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.2.5] Match 5: Nahatomb's Palace
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nahatomb (in his purple dinosaur incarnation) has amassed a fortune so
vast that gold and other glittering riches can be seen strewn across the
floor of his palace's great hall, where the court is. Nahatomb's ghostly
attendants are watching their master and the other participants. Who will
win the Championship?
Nahatomb and Super Garlen will always form the opposing team in this match.
Like Gantz, Nahatomb is slow yet powerful at hitting the ball, but he
has slightly better defensive skills. The greater danger is Super Garlen.
Being sore about losing the previous match, Garlen has enhanced himself,
and now he has attributes that either equal or surpass those of Nahatomb.
Outmaneuvering the opposing team with speed still works, but it definitely
won't be easy. Like before, one way to win is to wait for the opponents to
feint, and then make a direct attack.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.2.6] Epilogues
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Epilogue shown will be for the first member of your team.
The Difficulty Level has no effect on the Epilogue.
Klonoa
Demonstrating his new Super Attack, Klonoa accidentally destroys one of
Balue's buildings and winds up having to pay for it. Hey, it's not like
Klonoa really needs the money anyway, considering how he gets to "travel"
for free.
Chipple
Not believing that he has won so easily, Chipple keeps playing more matches
to seek a challenge. Now if only his real fighting skills are just as great.
Lolo
Still as clumsy as ever, Lolo brings along Popka and Klonoa to help her
carry some items when she goes shopping. Well, at least she isn't mindlessly
dropping precious Elements out from her sleeves.
Popka
Showing a side of himself that his friends have never seen before,
Popka goes on a glamour spree. Very, very disturbing.
Leorina
Garlen refuses to award Leorina with the prize money after she wins
the Championship, so she and Ta't steal Nahatomb's palace by lifting
it away with their plane. Don't mess with pirates, especially Sky Pirates.
Ta't
Not believing that Ta't has won, Leorina reluctantly fulfills a promise
that they have made earlier by having herself (along with their plane)
painted black-and-white, in a pattern similar to that of Ta't. On the
bright side, Leorina still looks hot.
Joka
Joka pulls off a trick to literally bloat up the size of his prize money,
but it backfires on him because the money now looks counterfeit. Maybe
he should have just stuck to changing the sum of money written on the
damn thing.
Heart Moo
By winning the Championship, Heart Moo inspires all Moos everywhere
to mimic his style and dress. Creepy.
Gantz
Garlen demands that Gantz return the prize money, but Gantz blows up
Nahatomb's palace and then drives away on his motorbike, continuing
on his personal quest for vengeance. Will he ever completely free
himself from his past?
Nahatomb
Nahatomb tries to attract more customers to his resort, but poor marketing
tactics ruin his business. Beats us, but he probably would have done a lot
better if he had consulted Masaya Nakamura.
Garlen
Garlen's victory prompts others, including Klonoa, Joka, and Moo, to use
similar machines to win, too. Garlen then decides to upgrade himself.
Apparently, he has never studied what happens when people get into an
arms race.
Super Garlen
Super Garlen's victory prompts others to also adopt super forms to win.
(Say hello to "Super Klonoa" and others.) Super Garlen then decides to
upgrade himself even more. Quite hilarious.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[2.2.7] Ranking
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After finishing Championship Mode, the first member of your team receives
a Rank ranging from D (lowest) to S (highest). The second member does not
receive any Rank.
The Rank is influenced mainly by the number of times your team has
continued, although the total points it has earned across its winning
matches also count. Finishing Championship Mode without continuing
results in a S, while continuing too many times results in a D.
If a character earns another Rank on a higher Difficulty Level or a
better Rank on the same Difficulty Level, it will replace the old one.
For example, if Klonoa earns an A on a Difficulty Level of 1 and then
earns a D on a Difficulty Level of 2, he will keep the latter Rank.
The Rank's Difficulty Level is indicated by the circle's color on the
Character Select Screen. 1 is blue, 2 is silver, and 3 is gold.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.3] Exhibition Mode
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Exhibition Mode, you can set up some quick matches. Almost any combination
of human and computer Players is possible. On the Setup Screens, each human
Player has a differently colored marker. Player 1 is red, Player 2 is blue,
Player 3 is yellow, and Player 4 is green.
The Pause Screen in this Mode has three options: Cancel, Character Select,
and Return to the Title Screen.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
800CDEC0 0000 to 0063 Team A Points
800CDEC2 0000 to 0063 Team B Points
For extremely quick and easy victories in Championship Mode, set Team A's
Points to at least 000A (HEX) and set Team B's Points to 0000 (HEX). That
way, as soon as the ball touches the ground (on either half of the court),
the match will be over and your team will instantly win. The highest amount
of Points a team can score in a match is normally 0012 (HEX), or 18 Points,
but messing around with these values can result in greater amounts of Points.

On the Beach Court, Klonoa and Heart Moo are playing against Gantz and
another character not shown. Gantz spikes the Moo ball, and Heart Moo fails
to block it as he leaps up, but Klonoa manages to dive toward it and catch
it with his right outstretched fist just before it touches the sand. Behind
the characters are large palm trees, looming up underneath a clear blue sky
with milky white clouds.
Disc Art: (Japanese)
The top of the disc resembles the yellow Moo ball used in the game.
The wide, circular eyes of the Moo ball can be seen, too.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[5.2] Really Small Details That Will Bore Even a Moo
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pac-Man Forever
Anyone notice that Klonoa is almost always seen wearing a cap with the image
of Pac-Man? That iconic character is constantly there, even when Klonoa has
changed from his old red clothes (from Door to Phantomile) to his newer blue
clothes and the backward cap (beginning from Sekai ga Nozonda Wasuremono).
Besides being a Namco joke, does this mean that Klonoa is a huge fan of
the pizza-profiled mascot and knows how to totally kick anyone's ass at
a match of classic Pac-Man?
Missing Body Parts
You may know this already, but have you seen how the upper portions of
some characters' arms and legs are not rendered at all? It's a neat trick,
because you don't really notice it while you are playing the game (at least
not until the camera moves up close to them at the end of a match, for their
poses), and it allows the other body parts, like the faces, to be drawn and
animated with greater amounts of detail.
Big Fat Moo Magic
You know how Heart Moo's Super Attack turns his opponents into Moos, right?
Do you also know that these Moos have sizes that depend on who the victims
are? For example, Nahatomb will morph into a much bigger Moo than Klonoa.
Forgotten Beach
Is Sunset Beach supposed to be in Hyuponia or something? Are the derelict
ship and the dry look of the entire place supposed to be hints about the
area? Maybe this is nothing more than one very bad coincidence, and there
is really nothing more to this beach than its interesting details?
Holy Crap
Checked out the Christmas Court yet? Apparently, the denizens of the dream
realms also recognize and celebrate the Yuletide. Maybe they should have
a Moo dress up in a Santa outfit. Come to think of it, that probably won't
look too out of place, given how colorful and spirited this world is and all.
Sports! Sports! Sports, sports, sports!
Volleyball isn't the only sport that Klonoa knows how to play. He also
appears in a few other Namco sports games. In some of the Ridge Racer
installments, he shows up in decals (along with other Namco characters),
while in Moto GP and Alpine Racer 3, he is a secret character who becomes
available when certain conditions are met. Funny enough, his stats are
actually higher in the other games where he is a playable character than
in this one. Does this suggest that Klonoa is better at motorcycle racing
and snowboarding than at volleyball? Does anyone also notice that his
apparent size seems to change a lot between all of these games?
Krezzy Comparisons
Just for fun, let's compare Klonoa to some of his equally nonhuman
predecessors: Pac-Man from the Pac-Man series, Mappy from the Mappy
series, and Thandra from the Valkyrie series. Let the freak show begin.
