[1] Overview
==============================================================================

Virtual Toys and Lexis Numerique's Horse Riders is a horse caretaking
and riding game that features a relaxed yet comprehensive treatment of
the subject. Its controls are based almost entirely on the Touch Screen
yet also support the traditional buttons for most parts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.1] Story
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sue likes spending her vacations with her uncle and aunt, who own a farm
at an area that is known for raising and training horses. However, when
an unscrupulous businessman comes to threaten everyone's well-being,
she must rely on her passion and her skills to save the day.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.2] Characters
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sue
The main protagonist. Sue has an honest, upfront nature, never being afraid
to express herself directly. She also loves horses and everything about them,
despite not having had many opportunities to actually ride them until now,
and she looks forward to vacationing every year at her uncle and aunt's farm
near the town of Appletree Hills. She has green eyes and black hair.

Sue's Personal Horse (Player-Named)
The horse given to Sue as a present from Tim. Sue's personal horse has
a few Stats bonuses and doesn't need to finish all of the Training Exercises
in order to go to Free Ride Mode.

Tim
Sue's uncle, and the owner of Golden Pines Farm along with his wife, Thelma.
Tim is a quiet but caring person. To reward Sue's hard work at school, he
has arranged to gift her a horse of her very own this year.

Thelma
Sue's aunt, and the owner of Golden Pines Farm along with her husband, Tim.
Thelma is extraordinarily kind and loving.

Pat
A clerk at the shop, Maple's. Pat has a sharp-witted, stylish demeanor
that reveals her city origins, but she has moved to Appletree Hills
after falling in love with the place and particularly one of its folks.
She has brown eyes and blond hair.

Melinda
The owner of Blackmane Farm, and a neighbor of Tim and Thelma. Melinda is
one of the leading residents of Appletree Hills, and she knows much about
the local lore. Her farm includes a simple racetrack that is open to anyone
who wishes to practice their riding skills.

Jim
Melinda's only son, and an employee at the Horse Market. Jim is an
accomplished rider and trainer himself, and he enjoys exploring the
woods just outside the town. He also likes Pat.

The Dog
A black-and-white stray. The dog is soon discovered by Sue and will want
 to follow her everywhere.

The Wild Herd Leader
A dark stallion, and the chief of the herd of wild horses rumored to live
somewhere near Appletree Hills. The leader possesses an unusual intelligence
along with sheer strength, endurance, and agility. He might secretly be
related to Shadowfax and the Mearas, lol.

Mr. Clifford
A wealthy businessman. Mr. Clifford projects an unfriendly, seemingly
heartless attitude, but he is actually a fair man who believes that
agreements should be fulfilled as promised. For some reason, however,
everyone keeps referring to him as "Mr. Cliff."

Donald
The main antagonist. Donald is the son of Mr. Clifford but shares few
qualities with his father. He is extremely rude and arrogant, and he
doesn't even like horses, merely exploiting them to add to his own prestige.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.3] Controls
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Touch Screen - Navigate the menus, and move. The Stable Modes (Feeding,
Training, Stable Cleaning, Hoof Cleaning, Brushing, and Washing) and
the puzzle scene are the only parts of the game where the Touch Screen
must be used. In the rest of the game, the traditional buttons may be
 used instead.

Map Movement and Turn Pad (D-Pad) - Move on the Area Select Map Screen,
and turn left and right. The Touch Screen's equivalent motion is a
leftward stroke and a rightward stroke.

Confirm and Accelerate Button (A) - Confirm (including any selection
of the red Back Arrow), and increase the Speed. The Touch Screen's
equivalent motion is an upward stroke. Also press this to continue
to the next part of dialogue. Use this instead of the Touch Screen
to avoid accidentally skipping any dialogue.
Speed Levels 1 (slow walk) and 2 (fast walk) will allow Stamina
to be recovered, while Speed Levels 3 (trot) and 4 (gallop) will
slowly deplete Stamina, represented by the meter of five heart icons.
If the Stamina is completely depleted, the Speed will be reduced and
limited to Level 2 until one heart icon's worth of Stamina is recovered.

Cancel and Decelerate Button (B) - Cancel, and decrease the speed.
When stopped at Speed Level 0 and not turning, hold this to step
backward. The Touch Screen's equivalent motion is a downward stroke.
(Continue to hold the Stylus on the Touch Screen to step backward.)
The Accelerate and Decelerate Buttons can also be held to continuously
increase and decrease the Speed, so they don't need to be repeatedly tapped.

Jump Button (X) - Jump. The Touch Screen's equivalent motion is a double-tap.
Jumping is possible only at Speed Levels 3 (trot) and 4 (gallop).

Move Camera Buttons (L and R) - Move the Camera left and right in
Brushing Mode and Washing Mode. The Touch Screen's equivalent motion
doesn't exist, but those Modes can be completed without moving the Camera.

Tutorial Button (Select) - Replay the Riding Tutorial in Free Ride Mode.

Pause Button (Start) - Pause. The Pause Screen has the options of
resuming the action and of exiting the current scene.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.5] Stable Modes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If an icon for one of the Stable Modes is moving, press the Confirm Button
to enter it (as an alternative to using the Touch Screen). Completing
the Hoof Cleaning, Brushing, and Washing Modes when their icons are moving
 will increase the horse's Care.

Feeding Mode (brown posts)
Drag the feed bag and the water pail to the indicated troughs (marked by
the yellow and the blue arrows) to fill them, or drag the Ball (purchased
from Maple's) to any spot and then release it to throw it.

Training Mode (white and red hurdle)
Go to the Training Exercise Select Menu.

Stable Cleaning Mode (pitchfork)
Double-tap the horse shit and the old straw to shovel them into the
wheelbarrow for disposal. Then, double-tap the bale of hay to take
batches of fresh straw, and double-tap the four indicated spots to
place the straw. Quickly double-tapping the Touch Screen here can
help with any responsivity issues. And, yes, this is a game where
one can finally get to shovel horse shit. XD

Free Ride Mode (riding cap) (extra horses only)
Go to Free Ride Mode with the current extra horse. This can be done only
after all of the Training Exercises have been completed with the horse.

Hoof Cleaning Mode (hoof pick)
Make sufficiently fast downward strokes to scrape off all of the pebbles
 and other rocky material.

Brushing Mode (red- and white-handled yellow brush)
Move the brush over the horse and clean away most of the dirt.
Revolve the camera or go for the legs to find enough to clean.

Washing Mode (green water hose)
Move the sponge over the horse and lather soap onto most of him.
Then, spray water on the horse and rinse off most of the suds.
Revolve the camera or go for the legs to find enough to clean.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.6] Training Exercises
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Training Mode, there are 8 Training Exercises. All of them must
be completed for Sue's personal horse to participate in Races and
for extra horses to go to Free Ride Mode. (Sue's personal horse
can already go to Free Ride Mode from the beginning.) If the horse
has low Trust, Apples or Carrots may be used to gain his cooperation.
The final two Training Exercises require the Rope (purchased from Maple's).

Walk - Double-tap the indicated spot to walk.

Stop - Double-tap the indicated spot to stop.

Stop and Go - Double-tap the indicated spot to walk, and then
double-tap the next indicated spot to stop.

90 Degree Turn - Double-tap the indicated spot to walk, and then
make a leftward stroke at the turn arrow.

180 Degree Turn - Double-tap the indicated spot to walk, and then
make a downward stroke at the U-turn arrow.

Circuit - Double-tap the indicated spot to walk, make a rightward stroke
at the right-turn arrow, make a leftward stroke at the left-turn arrow,
and then double-tap the indicated spot to stop.

Trot with Rope - Tap the triangular symbols when their contracting outlines
turn green to increase the pacing meter's bars. Missing will decrease them.
Maximize the pacing meter's bars (6 total) to successfully pass.

Jump with Rope - Draw the number or the letter that appears. Be sure to draw
large strokes, because small strokes are often misread. For the letter O,
the stroke can be made either clockwise or counterclockwise, but it should
 begin from the top.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.7] Stats
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A horse's Stats determine his performance in various situations.
Each of the Stats begins at 0 Stars and can be upgraded to a maximum
of 5 Stars, in increments of half a Star or a full Star.

Not all of the Stats will directly help a horse's performance in Race Mode
and Free Ride Mode, but all of them will affect the horse's resale value.
By default, a horse can be sold for half of his original purchase price,
but with maximized Stats, he can be sold for twice his original price.
(Sue's personal horse cannot be sold.)

Strength (red heart)
Indicates the horse's running Stamina, or how long he can keep moving at
Speed Levels 3 (trot) and 4 (gallop). This can be increased by completing
the Training Exercises (gaining two Stars) and by attempting to increase
his other Stats (gaining one Star), even if those are already maximized.
Sue's personal horse can also increase this by progressing through the story.

Care (yellow-handled brush)
Indicates the horse's level of grooming. This can be increased by completing
Hoof Cleaning, Brushing, and Washing Modes when their icons are moving
(gaining one Star). In reality, horses like to play in the outdoors
and are perfectly fine getting dirty, but horses prepared for racing
are regularly groomed for a better showing.

Trust (two intertwined flowers)
Indicates the horse's willingness to be handled, or how cooperative he
will be in Training Mode. This can be increased by playing Feeding Mode
and giving him food, giving him water, or petting him (gaining a Half Star
for each type of action). In Training Mode, if the horse has low Trust,
Apples or Carrots may be used to gain his cooperation.

Happiness (horse head with happy eyes)
Indicates the horse's emotional contentment. This can be increased
by playing Feeding Mode and using the Ball (purchased from Maple's).
Sue's personal horse can attain maximum Strength without increasing
this, and it can remain at zero for him with totally no problem, lol.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.8] Items
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.8.1] Free Ride Mode Items
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Token
A circular gold coin with a three-leaf clover symbol. Tokens are used
to purchase items and horses. In Free Ride Mode, touch a Token to
acquire 5 Tokens. In Race Mode, place first to earn 100 Tokens.
The Tokens in Sue's inventory can be viewed at Maple's and at the
 Horse Market.

Card
A standard-sized piece of high-quality paper that is meant to be collected.
Cards contain images and other information about the game's characters,
the game's areas, or horses in general. In Free Ride Mode, touch
a Card Cluster to acquire 3 randomly determined Cards. In Race Mode,
place first to earn 3 randomly determined Cards if most of the obstacle
jumps are successfully performed or 6 if all of the jumps are performed.
The Cards in Sue's inventory can be viewed at the Card Collection.
A Card may be traded away only if there is a spare copy available.

Apple
A nutritious, sweet-tasting, crisp-textured fruit with a thin skin that
is usually red in color, and a product of the valley's trees that give
the town its name. Apples can be fed to horses with low Trust to gain
their cooperation. In Free Ride Mode, touch an Apple to acquire it.
The Apples in Sue's inventory can be viewed in Training Mode (only
if the horse has low Trust).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.8.2] Race Mode Items
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Stopwatch (Time Bonus)
A classic device for timing events. Stopwatches freeze the timer for about
three seconds, effectively reducing Sue's time for the Race.

Lightning Bolt (Speed Bonus)
A blue and gold bolt of electricity. Lightning Bolts cause the horse to dash
forward at a super gallop for about three seconds. The horse can't slow down
during this dash, unless he botches an obstacle jump.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1.8.3] Shop Upgrade Items
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Maple's sells Carrots and permanent upgrade items. The leftside piles
of Tokens indicate Sue's Tokens, and the rightside single Token indicates
the currently displayed item's cost. (The middle curved arrow changes
between red and green to indicate whether Sue is potentially buying or
selling at Maple's or at the Horse Market. This game's menu design is
 really bad, lol.)

For the next Saddle or Blanket Upgrade to appear, the preceding item
has to be purchased, and then Maple's has to be exited and entered again.
(Unlike the Horse Market, Maple's doesn't fully refresh the menu after
 a transaction.)

Carrot (5 Tokens)
A nutritious, somewhat sweet-tasting, crisp-textured vegetable with an
orange root and green leaves. Carrots can be fed to horses with low Trust
to gain their cooperation. To save on Tokens, get some Apples instead.
The Carrots in Sue's inventory can be viewed in Training Mode (only
if the horse has low Trust).
 Pat:
 Horses love carrots. Give them
to your horse to make him
 happy.

Rope (10 Tokens)
A length of brown-colored natural fibers woven together into a sturdy cord.
The Rope is required for Training Mode's final two Exercises. Quit being
cheap, and go buy this, lol.
 Pat:
You need a rope for certain
 kinds of training exercises.

Ball (85 Tokens)
A big, red, bouncy sphere. The Ball is an permanent bonus option
that can be used to increase the horse's Happiness in Feeding Mode.
It is not necessary to finishing the story.
 Pat:
With this ball you will be able
 to play with your horse.

Saddle (Level 1) (100 Tokens)
A mounted seat with blocky corners and stiff-looking strap buckles.
The Saddle Upgrades' actual effects are unclear and don't affect performance
in any noticeable way. They are not necessary to finishing the story.
 Pat:
 This special saddle improves
 your performance when riding a
 horse.

Saddle (Level 2) (165 Tokens)
A mounted seat that has rounder curves.

Saddle (Level 3) (195 Tokens)
A mounted seat of a very light design.

Blanket (Level 1) (180 Tokens)
A wide, dark gray cloth with large, rectangular trimming at the ends.
The Blanket Upgrades' actual effects are unclear and don't affect performance
in any noticeable way. They are not necessary to finishing the story.
 Pat:
 With this blanket your horse
will be more at ease when you
 ride him.

Blanket (Level 2) (225 Tokens)
A wide, dark gray cloth with fine trimming on all four sides.

Blanket (Level 3) (280 Tokens)
A wide, dark gray cloth with no trimming at all.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1.9] General Tips
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 - The white navigation arrows (amidst the standard yellow ones) on the
Area Select Map Screen and in Free Ride Mode indicate where Sue has to
go next to proceed with the story.

 - The controls are more reliable with the traditional buttons than the
Touch Screen, especially in Race Mode. The Touch Screen is absolutely
required only in Stable Modes and the puzzle scene.

 - Race Mode is really more like a time attack challenge, where Sue has to
finish the course as soon as possible and hope that she will place first
in the time rankings revealed at the end. Perform a jump as soon as the
Jump Indicator's corner dots turn green to successfully pass the obstacles
with the Speed maintained. Missing won't cause Sue to crash into a horrible,
bloody mess, but her horse will manage a crappier leap that reduces the
Speed to Level 2 for several seconds, similar to running out of Stamina.

 - Jumping is possible only at Speed Levels 3 (trot) and 4 (gallop).
In Race Mode, if the Stamina is down to a single heart icon, reduce
the Speed to Level 2 (fast walk) to recover some Stamina and ensure
every obstacle jump can be successfully performed.

 - In Race Mode, Sue must place first to win the main prize of 100 Tokens.
Missing at least one of the obstacle jumps will yield a bonus of 3 Cards,
while successfully performing all of the jumps will yield a larger bonus
of 6 Cards. If Sue doesn't place first in a Race, she can keep trying again.

 - When proceeding through the story and playing each Race for the
first time, there is no need to purchase any item from Maple's except
for the Rope (which is required for Training Mode's final two Exercises).

 - Replaying the Races is the fastest way to earn Tokens after the story
is completed. However, every win will cause the competitors to improve
their times relative to Sue's. Due to unfortunate balancing issues,
Sue eventually won't be able to place first in the Races, even with
 maximized Stats and Shop Upgrades.

 - To quickly reset the Stats growth readiness for the Stable Modes or the
offerings at the Horse Market, turn off the game and load the File again.

 - The game automatically saves Sue's progress. After a File is selected,
the game will start her off usually at or near where she has to go next
to proceed with the story (including any story scenes in Free Ride Mode).
Sue's Room or the Area Select Map Screen is a safe spot to turn off the game.

[2] Strategies
==============================================================================

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.0] Prologue: Arrival and Riding Tutorial
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story:

 Sue:

Touch the letters to write your
 name.

Walkthrough:

Using the Touch Screen, enter the File's name.
The File's name is limited to 10 characters.

Story:

 Sue:

Hello! My name is Sue. Pleased
 to meet you!

I am visiting at my aunt and
uncle's farm. I'm so happy to be
 back!

Horses are my life passion! I
 love being with them, grooming
them and going for a ride.

And this year is going to be
 great! Uncle Tim promised me
we could buy a horse! I'm so
 excited...

You need to know how to go
from one area to another before
we can go meet my Uncle.

Look, you can see the Golden
Pines map on the Touch Screen.
Drag with the stylus to move
 along the map [sic]

Now tap the house twice with
the stylus to enter my room.
 Look, the white arrow is
 pointing at it.

To enter an area, you can also
tap it with the stylus and then
 press the A Button.

Walkthrough:

Go to the farmhouse, and enter Sue's Room.

Story:

 Sue:

This is my room. You can do a
 lot of things here.

This is a display cabinet I use to
store trophies. I hope you will
 help me fill it up.

I keep my card collection in here
as well. Let's get them all!

Speaking of cards, you can come
 here to change duplicate cards
with whoever [sic] you want to.

Oh yes, if you have any doubts
you can check my diary. I always
write down all that matters to
 me.

Now that we're done in my room
 let's go find Uncle Tim.

Let's go back to the Golden
Pines map. Touch the red arrow
 or press the B Button.

Walkthrough:

Exit Sue's Room, and return to the Area Select Map Screen.

Story:

 Tim:

At last! I was beginning to think
 you weren't coming.

 Sue:

 Sorry for being late Uncle.

 Tim:

 Don't worry. Are you ready?

 Sue:

Of course! What do I have to
 do?

 Tim:

Go to the Horse Market and talk
to Jim, he'll help you pick out
the horse you want. I'll get your
 stable ready at Golden Pines.

 Sue:

 Thanks Uncle Tim.

Look at the map, the white arrow
is pointing at another area, can
 you see it?

 Always look for the white
arrows to know where you have
 to go next.

This exit leads to town. Select it
just like you selected my room.

Walkthrough:

Follow the instructions, and choose the gate to go to the town
 of Appletree Hills.

Story:

 Sue:

 This is Appletree Hills. This
 town is amazing.

 Look, the white arrow is
 pointing at the Horse Market.
 Quick, let's go in!

Walkthrough:

Follow the instructions again, and enter the Horse Market.

Story:

 Jim:

Hello Sue, I was expecting you.

 Sue:

Good morning Jim. What do I
 have to do?

 Jim:

I've already talked to your uncle
about the details. Now you only
need to pick the horse you want.

Look at the bottom screen and
use the stylus to select a breed.
Tap the horse when you make up
 your mind.

Walkthrough:

Choose a breed, which is purely for cosmetic preferences and doesn't affect
the Stats. Sue's personal horse can't be changed for another later, so this
should still be decided with care.

 - Akhal-Teke (light brown, with black mane)
 - Andalusian (white, with gray mane)
 - Hanoverian (brown, with black mane)
 - Palomino (light brown, with white mane)
 - Arabian Thoroughbred (brown, with black mane)
 - English Thoroughbred (light brown, with black mane)
 - American Saddlebred (brown, with white mane and mid-stripe)
 - French Saddlebred (light brown, with brown mane)
 - Westphalian (brown, with brown mane)
 - Oldenburg (brown, with black mane)

Story:

 Jim:

 Good. Now choose a character.
Keep in mind that tame horses
are easier to train, but they
 don't like getting tired.

Walkthrough:

Choose the horse's character, which merely determines his starting Stats.
The Stats can be eventually maximized, so the choice here doesn't really
matter. However, due to the Training Exercises that Sue will need to
complete soon, choosing Normal or Meek will give her an easier start.

 - Meek (more Trust but less Strength)
 - Normal (default choice, moderate Trust and moderate Strength)
 - Brave (more Strength but less Trust)

Story:

 Jim:

Now give it a nice name and
 we'll be done.

Walkthrough:

Give the horse a name, similar to giving the File a name.
The horse's name is limited to 10 characters.

Story:

 Jim:

 Hey Sue! Good choice!

 Sue:

Thanks! I hope we can soon be
friends, [the horse] is still a bit
 uncomfortable with me.

 Jim:

 Of course, especially after a
 little training and riding around
town. You can ride a horse, can't
 you?

 Sue:

To be honest, I could use some
 advice.

 Jim:

 No problem, just bring him
around to the backyard and I'll
 teach you the basics.

Walkthrough:

At this point, there is a chance to go back and redo the choices.
 When ready, confirm the selection.

The Riding Tutorial (in Free Ride Mode's Waving Fields) will cover
controlling the Speed, making turns, performing jumps, and managing
 the Stamina (running endurance).

Story:

 Jim:

Let's start with an easy one:
 getting the horse to walk.

Use the stylus to draw a straight
 line upwards to start walking.
Do it several times to go faster.

 Sue:

 This is fun!

 Jim:

Ha. You're getting the hang of it
 pretty quickly. Now try slowing
 down by drawing a line
 downwards with the stylus.

 Sue:

 Got it.

 Jim:

Use the stylus to draw a line to
the right to make the horse turn
 right.

Or use the stylus to draw a line
to the left to make the horse
 turn left.

 Well done! Jumping comes last.
 Double tapping with your stylus
will make the horse jump over
obstacles if you are at the right
 speed.

 Sue:

 Great!

 Jim:

While riding your horse you will
see a bar full of hearts on the
left side of the screen. It shows
 your horse's endurance.

When your horse gets tired he
will lose hearts. Just slow down
a little to let him gain endurance
 again.

 I can see you're a natural for
 horses! That's impressive. I'm
 sure you two will become
friends in no time. Make sure you
take good care of your friend.

 Sue:

 How do I do it?

 Jim:

Just touch the farm icon to bring
[the horse] to your stables and ask
your uncle. He knows all you
 need to know.

Walkthrough:

During the Riding Tutorial, Sue is free to explore Waving Fields
and even gather the items here, but she won't be able to travel
to the other Areas yet. If the horse begins with a Brave character
(having less Trust), Sue should grab some Apples now to allow
her to proceed with the Training Exercises that will come soon.
Getting a few Tokens may also help.

To end the Riding Tutorial, tap the lower right Farmhouse Icon.

Story:

 Tim:

Hello Sue. I heard Jim taught you
 how to ride [the horse].

 Sue:

Yes, he has been very helpful.
 But something's still bothering
 me.

 Tim:

 What is it?

 Sue:

Jim told me that I had to take
special care of [the horse] if I
wanted to be his best friend.

 Tim:

Don't worry, it's all very easy.
Let's start by selecting [the horse]
 using the stylus. Tapping is
enough to get the horse you want
to come out of the stable. Do it
now, I'll wait for you outside.

Walkthrough:

Tim's dialogue doesn't reflect how the menus actually work in the
Special Stable. For now, choose the Hoof Cleaning Icon, which will
 be moving.

In Hoof Cleaning Mode, on the Touch Screen, make repeated
up-and-down motions to use the hoof pick to scrape off every
bit of rock stuck on the horse's hoof.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.1] Part 1: Training Exercises and Race 1: Livestock Fair Day
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Diary:

 Jim taught me how
 to ride. It's fun!

Walkthrough:

Now that Sue has been acquainted with her own horse and began to learn
how to care for him, she feels like taking him out for another ride.

Head back out to Appletree Hills, and go to Free Ride Mode
 (the woods at the east).

Story:

 Sue:

So these are the Waving Fields.

Huh? What's this? Is it... a dog?

Ah, poor thing, it seems lost and
hungry. Come, boy! I'll give you
 something to eat!

Movie:

A dog approaches Sue. Now Sue has a dog, lol.

Story:

(Sue automatically returns to Golden Pines.)

 Sue:

 You were starving, weren't you?
Hehe. He looks so happy now...

 Thelma:

Sue? What have you got there?

 Sue:

Oh, Aunt Thelma! Well, it's a...
 you know...

 Thelma:

Oh, so this is the one who's been
scaring the cattle for days, huh?

 Sue:

He was hungry! It's not his
fault, I'm sure! By the way, can
 we...?

 Thelma:

Keep him? I knew you were
going to ask me that! Well... All
 right, he can stay.

 Sue:

 Cool! You're the best!

 Thelma:

But you have to take care of
 him, understood? He is your
 responsibility now.

 Sue:

Don't worry; I'll take good care
 of him!

Diary:

 Now that I've learnt
 to take care of my
 horse I'll show
 everyone what I can
 do by winning a
 competition.

Walkthrough:

Go to Appletree Hills' Town Square, and try to choose the first Race,
Livestock Fair Day. However, Sue will realize that she needs some more
 preparation before she can participate.

Story:

 Sue:

I should train my horse before
 taking part in this race.

Walkthrough:

Return to Golden Pines, go to the Special Stable, and go to Training Mode
(the red and white hurdles icon). All of the Training Exercises must be
completed before the first Race may be played. If Sue's personal horse
has low Trust, she can feed him Apples (found in Free Ride Mode) or
Carrots (purchased from Maple's), by tapping the appropriate icons.

For the final two Training Exercises, Sue will need a Rope.

Story:

 Tim:

You need a rope to do this
 training exercise. Why don't you
go to the store to buy one?

Walkthrough:

Go to the shop, Maple's, purchase the Rope for 10 Tokens, and then
return to the Special Stable. Resume the Training Exercises.

Story:

 Tim:

 Well done! You've successfully
 finished all training exercises.

Walkthrough:

When ready, head back to the Town Hall.

The first Race, Livestock Fair Day, takes place at a nice forest trail
and contains 9 obstacle jumps. It has a simple, straightforward course.
Interestingly enough, it is also the longest of the Races.

Perform a jump as soon as the Jump Indicator's corner dots turn green.
Jumping is possible only at Speed Levels 3 and 4, so maintain maximum
Speed as much as possible, slowing to Level 2 only if the Stamina is
 down to one heart icon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.2] Part 2: Wild Herd Sighting and Race 2: High School Trophy
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story:

 Sue:

 I won! I'm so happy!

 Donald:

 Congratulations indeed. It's no
wonder someone like you is so
happy to have won this limping
 donkeys competition.

Luckily for you, I wasn't in the
race. I would have finished way
before your sorry excuse for a
 horse left the starting line.

 Sue:

For a foreigner you sure are very
 snobby. Who are you?

 Donald:

 My name is Donald Clifford.
Remember my name; soon it'll be
on the cover of every magazine.
I'm the best rider in the world.

 Looks like newspaper people
want me to beat one of you
 local country folk before they
 interview me and...

 Mr. Clifford:

 Donald, enough. I have business
 to attend to.

 Donald:

 But Father! This girl...

 Mr. Clifford:

Now! And don't you dare say
 another word on our way.

 Sue:

Who were those two? I'd better
ask my uncle and my aunt.

(Sue automatically returns to Golden Pines.)

 Tim:

Sue! It was a great race. We're
 proud of you.

 Thelma:

 What's up? You don't look
 happy.

 Sue:

I just met this guy called Donald
Clifford. He was really rude to
 me.

 Tim:

So you have already met Donald.

 Thelma:

 Do you know him Tim?

 Tim:

Yes, he just arrived with his
father, known only as Mr. Cliff.

 Sue:

He told me he would easily win
 all the races.

 Tim:

Sue, you've got to stop him! If
 Donald wins the whole town
 will be in danger.

 Sue:

 Danger? Why? I thought races
 were just holidays and fairs.

 Tim:

 It's much more important than
that. A lot of foreigners come to
the races to watch. Most of them
 are horse trainers and
 businessmen. When someone
wins all the races, people want
 to buy his horses.

 Sue:

 So?

 Tim:

 Up until now, the winner's
 always been from Appletree
 Hills and it's organised so
 everyone may profit and grow
 from the business following the
race. But if a foreigner were to
 win...

 Thelma:

Most of the farms would go out
 of business. We wouldn't last
 much longer.

 Sue:

But we have the best horses in
 the world. How does Donald
 expect to beat us?

 Tim:

He bought one of ours a couple
of years ago. Besides, he wants to
hunt the herd of wild horses.

 Thelma:

The herd is just a fairy tale.

 Tim:

Maybe, but some people claim to
 have seen it.

 Sue:

I'll go after it too. If the herd
exists I can't let Donald capture
 any horses.

Let's go back to the farm. I need
to get ready for the next race.
 Spending time in the meadows
will do a lot for my skills.

Diary:

I think I will go for
 a walk with my horse
 to cool off.

Walkthrough:

Sue is really pissed off by Donald, and knowing that he can
ruin Appletree Hills is putting much on her mind.

So, Sue should do what any sensible girl does in this situation
by wandering around alone in the countryside. XD

Go to Free Ride Mode, and follow the white navigation arrows
to Rustlers Forest and the indicated location there.

Story:

 Sue:

 What's this? I can't believe it.
It's the herd of wild horses! It
 really exists!

Movie:

A black stallion leads a herd of wild horses.

Walkthrough:

Sue is surprised at the sight of the wild herd, but there
is nothing else important to do here for now. When ready,
exit Free Ride Mode and return to town.

Diary:

 I need to buy supplies
 for the horses. Will
 the shop be open?

Walkthrough:

Although Sue writes about needing to go buy supplies at the shop,
her actual motive is something else. Head over to Maple's.

Story:

 Pat:

Hello Sue! What can I do for you
 today?

 Sue:

Hey Pat, have you heard about a
herd of wild horses from around
 here?

 Pat:

A herd of wild horses you say?
 Hmmm, no I never heard
 anything of it, sorry.

 Sue:

 It's ok Pat, thanks anyway.

 Pat:

 I would ask Melinda.

 Sue:

 Melinda?

 Pat:

 Yes, the owner of Blackmane
 Farm and Jim's mother.

 Sue:

Yes, I know who she is. You
think she knows about the wild
 horses?

 Pat:

She seems to know a bit of
 everything. Why don't you ask
 her?

 Sue:

 I will. Thanks Pat.

Walkthrough:

Exit the shop. Sue will automatically go to Blackmane Farm.

Story:

 Melinda:

Hello Sue. How nice of you to
 visit!

 Sue:

 Hello Melinda. Actually I came
because I wanted to ask you
 something.

 Melinda:

Don't be shy dear. What do you
want to know? I hope it's
 nothing too personal.

 Sue:

Do you know anything about the
 herd of wild horses?

 Melinda:

A herd of wild horses you say?
That's a fairy tale, useful for
 when parents put their children
 to bed.

 Sue:

It's not a fairy tale. I've seen it.

 Melinda:

 Only the most accomplished
riders dare to say such a thing.

 Sue:

I won the Livestock Fair Day
 competition.

 Melinda:

Ha, ha, ha. Look Sue, I like you
but winning that does not mean
much. My son Jim won that race
when he was eight years old.

 Sue:

I'll win another race and you'll
 have to tell me everything.

 Melinda:

I certainly hope so. Prepare well
for the High School Trophy. If
you come in first place we'll
 talk.

Diary:

 I must win the race
 then Melinda will tell
 me everything she
 knows about wild
 horses.

Walkthrough:

Go to Appletree Hills' Town Square, and try to choose the second Race,
High School Trophy. Sue will realize that she needs to take care of
something with her horse before she can participate.

Story:

 Sue:

I should brush my horse before
 taking part in this race.

Walkthrough:

Return to Golden Pines, go to the Special Stable, and enter
Brushing Mode. Brush the dirt off the bugger. When ready,
head back to the Town Hall.

The second Race, High School Trophy, takes place at a wide country road
and contains 10 obstacle jumps. It has a course that is still simple and
mostly straight. Despite having more obstacle jumps, it turns out to be
 shorter than the first Race.

Again, perform a jump as soon as the Jump Indicator's corner dots
turn green, and maintain maximum speed as much as possible, slowing
to Speed Level 2 only when the Stamina is down to one heart icon.
Grabbing the items can help, but don't worry about missing them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.3] Part 3: Wild Herd Research and Race 3: Saint's Day
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story:

(Sue automatically goes to Blackmane Farm.)

 Melinda:

When I saw you win the last
race I knew you would come.

 Sue:

Can you tell me about the herd
 of wild horses now, please?

 Melinda:

 I remember my mother telling
me stories about a herd of wild
 horses that lived around
 Appletree Hills.

They were fast and tireless. And
leading the herd was the biggest
and fastest of them all. A huge
sleek horse, black as the night.
My friends and I would sleep and
dream about the herd and its
 leader.

 In our fantasy we discovered
 where they lived and we
pretended to ride with the herd,
 thundering past the fields. In
time we grew up and realised it
 was just a fairy tale.

 Sue:

 The herd isn't a fairy tale; I've
 seen it!

 Melinda:

So you say. Supposedly, the herd
lives in a hidden valley. Some
people have flown over the area
 with helicopters and found
 nothing.

When I was younger some people
said that the herd was simply a
myth, a dream or horses' ghosts.

 Sue:

I'm not lying! I've seen the herd
 of wild horses!

 Melinda:

Look, go talk to Jim. He is the
one spending more time in the
outskirts of town. He will know
if you're telling the truth. If
someone has seen the herd of
 wild horses, it's Jim.

Walkthrough:

Melinda has the right idea. Exit Blackmane Farm.
Sue will automatically meet Jim at the town.

Story:

 Sue:

Jim, can I talk with you for a
 moment?

 Jim:

 Of course. What's the matter?

 Sue:

It's about the herd of wild
 horses.

 Jim:

It's just a tale for children.

 Sue:

Come on! You know as well as I
do that they're real. And Donald
wants to get them all, you know.

 Jim:

Some people say that Donald is
really cruel to his horses. He
hurts them and drives them to
 exhaustion.

 Sue:

 Then you understand why we
must find the herd first and ruin
 Donald's plans!

 Jim:

Well, it's true that I can tell you
 more about the wild horses...

 Sue:

 Finally!

 Jim:

But not until you prove your
 worth by winning another
 competition.

 Sue:

 What? Not again! Like mother,
like son. Fine, I'll do it! But
 there's no backing down after
 this, understood?

Diary:

 Melinda has asked
 me to win a race.

(This entry appears to be miswritten. That should be Jim,
 not Melinda, lol.)

Walkthrough:

Go to Appletree Hills' Town Square, and try to choose the third Race,
Saint's Day. Again, Sue will realize that she needs to take care of
something with her horse before she can participate.

Story:

 Sue:

I don't think my horse is ready
for a race. Something is stuck in
 one of its hooves.

Walkthrough:

Return to Golden Pines, go to the Special Stable, and go to
Hoof Cleaning Mode. Grab that hoof pick and scrape off the
crap. When ready, head back to the Town Hall. Here we go again.

The third Race, Saint's Day, takes place at some nice farm country roads
and contains 9 obstacle jumps. There is a fork right after the second
Lightning Bolt, but both paths are rather similar. Choosing one or the
 other doesn't really matter.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.4] Part 4: Flagstone Fragment and Race 4: Farmer's Trophy
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story:

 Sue:

All right! I've won! Now Jim
will tell me about the herd of
 wild horses.

 Donald:

No need to bother. I've already
got plenty of them in my pens.
It's only a matter of time until I
catch them all and their leader to
 boot!

 Sue:

No such thing! I'm going to put
 an end to this.

 Donald:

Ah yes, I thought you would say
that. So I suggest we make a
 bet.

There are two more races left
this year. If I win the last one
you'll have to work for me and
bring all the wild horses you can
 find.

 Sue:

And if I win you will release all
 the wild horses you have
 captured so far.

 Donald:

 Hah! Fine, you won't win
 anyway.

 Sue:

I don't like dealing with you,
but this is the only way of
freeing all the wild horses you've
 captured. You're on!

 Donald:

 Excellent. Don't forget you have
given your word on this. See you
 at my victory party!

(Sue automatically goes to Blackmane Farm.)

 Jim:

Ah, I was expecting you Sue.

 Sue:

Jim, I made a bet with Donald.

 Jim:

 What?

 Sue:

If I win he'll free all the wild
horses he has in his pens, but if
I lose I'll have to catch more
wild horses for him. I need your
 help Jim.

 Jim:

I see you're really committed to
 this. I'm afraid I can't tell you
 much about the horses.

 Sue:

 Every little thing helps Jim.

 Jim:

Out of the whole town I'm the
one who has seen the herd of
wild horses most. I've seen them
so many times I'm not surprised
 any more.

 Sue:

Do you know where could I find
 them?

 Jim:

 I'm afraid I can't help you there.
But I can tell you this: most
 times I've seen them galloping
 around the rocky area. Look
 there first.

 Sue:

 Thanks Jim.

Diary:

 Jim told me to
 search the rocky area
 but...

Walkthrough:

Go to Free Ride Mode, and follow the white navigation arrows
to Rocky Area and the indicated location there.

Story:

 Sue:

What did you find here? No
 apple trees here.

 And this? It's a strange rock. It's
more like a fragment of a larger
 stone. Hmm, there are some
 etchings on this surface.

I'd better get back to the farm
and ask my aunt and uncle about
 it.

Walkthrough:

The strange stone indeed sticks out from the rest of the scenery,
but there is nothing else important to do here for now. When ready,
 exit Free Ride Mode.

Story:

(Sue automatically returns to Golden Pines.)

 Sue:

 Hello Uncle Tim. Could you
have a look at this please?

 Tim:

 Wow, this looks familiar. Where
 did you find this?

 Sue:

In the rocky area, I was lucky my
dog found it among so many
 rocks and stones.

 Tim:

 I remember seeing something
like this in the rocky area. There
 was a flagstone with some
carvings on it. One night there
 was a fierce thunderstorm and
the next day the stone was
 shattered.

 Sue:

 Shattered? How?

 Tim:

We assumed that it had been
 toppled by the wind.

 Sue:

Where can I find the rest of the
 flagstone then?

 Tim:

 I don't know. I believe someone
from town picked up the pieces.
Your best chance is to ask
 Melinda.

 Sue:

 Yes, Melinda seems to know
quite a lot about everything and
 everyone in town. Thanks Uncle
 Tim!

 Tim:

 You're welcome.

(Sue automatically goes to Blackmane Farm.)

 Melinda:

Oh dear, so little time and so
 much to do.

 Sue:

 Hello Melinda! Could you please
 take a look at this?

 Melinda:

Hey Sue. I'm afraid I'm too busy
 now. Come back later.

 Sue:

It will only be a moment.

 Melinda:

 Look, Blackmane Farm is
 organizing the next competition.
There is a lot to do and time is
running out. Our reputation is at
 stake!

 Sue:

I'm sure everything will be fine,
as it has been in previous years.
No need to worry about that.

 Melinda:

The thing is that up until now
the winner has always been a
local horse. This year a lot of
people think Donald will win. If
he were to win with a foreign
horse our reputation as one of
the best horse breeders will be
 ruined!

 Sue:

I get it now. If I win the next
 competition you'll answer my
questions. I'll go and get ready.

 Melinda:

 Make us proud!

Diary:

 Again Melinda has
 asked me to win a
 race. I hope she can
 help me with the
 stone I found.

Walkthrough:

Go to Appletree Hills' Town Square, and try to choose the fourth Race,
Farmer's Trophy. Once again, Sue will realize that she needs to take care
of something with her horse before she can participate.

Story:

 Sue:

I should wash my horse before
 taking part in this race.

Walkthrough:

Return to Golden Pines, go to the Special Stable, and go to
Washing Mode. Soap up and then rinse off the horse. When ready,
head back to the Town Hall. Is this becoming familiar, or what?

The fourth Race, Farmer's Trophy, takes place at an off-highway dirt road
and contains 7 obstacle jumps. There are no forks here, but the course has
sharper turns that can make obstacle jumps more difficult to see, so always
keep an eye on the Jump Indicator.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.5] Part 5: Wild Herd Location and Race 5: Charity Cup
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story:

 Melinda:

 Congratulations Sue! I knew
you'd win! Thanks to you I can
 have a little rest now.

 Sue:

What can you tell me about this
 stone?

 Melinda:

Straight to the point, as usual.
 Here, let me see.

 Sue:

Do you recognise it? My uncle
told me it's part of a flagstone
 from the rocky area.

 Melinda:

Yes, he's right. There was a
 flagstone there. One surface was
 filled with marks.

 Sue:

 What about those marks?

 Melinda:

I heard that the marks were a
way to make contact with horse
spirits. Like a kind of map even.

 Sue:

That map leads to the valley
where the herd of wild horses
 lives, I'm certain!

 Melinda:

You need the entire flagstone to
 prove it; this fragment isn't
 enough.

 Sue:

It's a start. I'll get the rest of
the pieces no matter what; but I
don't even know where to start.

 Melinda:

Why don't you ask your aunt?

 Sue:

 Aunt Thelma?

 Melinda:

Your aunt told me the exact
same thing when she brought me
 another piece of stone.

(Sue automatically returns to Golden Pines.)

 Sue:

 Aunt Thelma?

 Thelma:

 Yes dear, what is it?

 Sue:

 Do you recognise this stone?
Melinda told me you had another
 one.

 Thelma:

Yes, I have a carved stone just
like this one. Do you need it?

 Sue:

 Yes please.

 Thelma:

Well, the thing is that I'm not
sure where it is now. It should
be around the farm somewhere. I
just can't remember where I put
 it.

 Sue:

 We did some housecleaning a
 while ago.

 Melinda:

Oh yes, you're right. Then the
only place left to check is the
stables and pens. Let me know if
you find it. I'll try to remember
 while you're looking.

Diary:

 Let's check all the
 stables. The stone
 might be in one of
 them.

Walkthrough:

Go to the Horse Stable. Wow, that was fast. XD

Story:

 Sue:

Hey! Could it be this? Yes, it's
got marks too! I've found it!

 Thelma:

You found it then? Is it the
 stone you were looking for?

 Sue:

Yes! I'm still not sure how these
stones are related but I'll find
 out soon.

 Thelma:

I don't know if it's of any use to
 you, but I remembered where
 this stone came from.

 Sue:

 Really? That's great! Please tell
 me.

 Thelma:

I bought it at the shop in town.
You know, the one where Pat
 works.

 Sue:

 Thanks for remembering Aunt
Thelma, you're the best. I'll ask
Pat. She might have other stones
 for sale.

Diary:

 I've been to the shop
 several times but
 never saw any
 stones. Well, there's
 no harm in asking
 Pat.

Walkthrough:

 Go to Maple's.

Story:

 Pat:

 Hello. Can I help you?

 Sue:

Yes you can. Do you remember
 seeing any stones with strange
 carvings in the shop?

 Pat:

 With strange carvings? Yes, I've
got a stone just like the one you
 described.

 Sue:

 I'll take it.

 Pat:

I'm afraid it's not for sale.

 Sue:

Not for sale? But I need it
 urgently!

 Pat:

 But I can't sell it. It's a present
 from a friend. Do you
 understand?

 Sue:

 I do. I won't insist. Goodbye.

Walkthrough:

Exit Maple's. Back out in the town, Sue will immediately meet Jim.

Story:

 Jim:

Ah, Sue. I was looking for you.
 My mother has told me
 everything.

 Sue:

Hello Jim. I found out Pat's got
one of the stones I need but she
 won't give it to me.

 Jim:

I know. I gave it to her.

 Sue:

 You gave it to her?

 Jim:

Yes I did. Let me talk to her.

Walkthrough:

Return to Maple's. Talk about being awkward, lol.

Story:

 Pat:

Hello. Can I help...? You again?
I told you before. It's not for
 sale.

 Jim:

Hello Pat. I need to ask you for a
 favour.

 Pat:

 Jim, what is it?

 Jim:

I need you to lend Sue the stone
I gave you. Without it she won't
be able to stop Donald from
 winning all the races.

 Pat:

 All right. Take it.

 Sue:

 Thanks a lot!

 Pat:

But give it back as soon as you're
 done with it!

 Sue:

 Don't worry. I will.

Well, I've got the stone but I
don't have any leads. I'd better
 ask Melinda again.

Walkthrough:

 Exit Maple's again.

Story:

(Sue automatically goes to Blackmane Farm.)

 Sue:

I hope Melinda can help me with
 this. Wait, isn't that...

 Donald:

Tell me now, woman! Is this
 stone for real?

 Melinda:

Leave me alone! I know nothing!
 Get out of my farm!

 Sue:

 What's going on here?

 Donald:

It's none of your business. What
are you doing on this dreadful
 farm anyway? Wait a second,
 those stones you're carrying...

 Sue:

 They're nothing!

 Donald:

No, they are the confirmation I
was looking for. They mean that
the final stone shows the way to
 the Hidden Valley.

 Sue:

I'll find that stone before you
 do.

 Donald:

It's too late! I already have it.

 Sue:

It can't be! How did you get it?

 Donald:

It doesn't matter. Now I only
need to organise a search team to
capture the leader of the herd.
Once I catch it I'll be
 invincible!

 Melinda:

 We don't care! Get out!

 Donald:

You can have the last stone. I
don't need it to find the Hidden
Valley. See you at the award
 ceremony. Remember our bet.

 Melinda:

 He's gone at last.

 Sue:

Now what? I can't let him find
the Hidden Valley and catch all
 the wild horses.

 Melinda:

You'll have to make do with
what you have. You can't give up
 now!

 Sue:

 You're right, I can't give up
now. I'd better try to find the
Valley, or at least more leads.

Diary:

 I've got to find a
 lead that will help
 me find the herd of
 wild horses before he
 does.

Walkthrough:

Go to Free Ride Mode, and follow the white navigation arrows to
 Rocky Area and the flagstone.

Story:

 Sue:

This is where I found the first
 piece of stone.

What is it? Oh my... Another
 piece! Good boy!

Hmmm, wait a second. If I put
this stone here and this other
 one over there...

Put the stones in the proper
 order and unravel the mystery!

Walkthrough:

Complete the flagstone puzzle scene by assembling the stone fragments.
A piece will become locked in place when moved into the correct position.

 - The Forest Stone is at the right.
 - The Water Stone is at the bottom right.
 - The Mountain Stone is at the left.
 - The Wind Stone is at the top.
 - The Horse Stone is at the middle.

Story:

 Sue:

Hurrah! Donald has a head start
but I must try to make
something out of the marks in
 these stones.

 These notches look like horses
and trees. They seem to be
 pointing towards something. And
 this looks like water.

 I know! Rustlers! The entrance
to the Hidden Valley must be
 there!

(Sue automatically goes to Rustlers Forest and walks through the
secluded northeast section. Her movement here can't be stopped.)

 Sue:

According to the stones it should
 be around here.

(Sue automatically goes to Hidden Valley.)

 Sue:

 I can't believe this. It's... the
leader of the herd of wild
horses! Why are you not running
 away?

Ah I get it. You've come to
realise it too. The only way we
can free the other horses is by
 working together.

Will you help me please? If you
want I can take you to my farm.

Movie:

The wild herd leader approaches Sue. If there are any other horses,
 they aren't in sight.

Story:

(Sue automatically returns to Golden Pines.)

 Sue:

 When Uncle Tim and Aunt
Thelma see this they'll be very
surprised. Now we have a chance
 to beat Donald!

Diary:

 With the help of the
 leader of the herd of
 wild horses I have a
 chance to beat
 Donald.

Walkthrough:

Go to Appletree Hills' Town Square, and try to choose the fifth Race,
Charity Cup. For the final time, Sue will realize that she needs to
take care of something with her horse before she can participate.

Story:

 Sue:

Before I try to beat Donald I
should ride this new horse on a
 training track.

Walkthrough:

Go to Blackmane Farm, and go to Practice Race Mode.

The Practice Race takes place at Blackmane Farm's simple track
and contains 5 obstacle jumps. The course runs counterclockwise
along this track. When ready, head back to the Town Hall.

The fifth Race, Charity Cup, takes place at a forest trail
and contains 6 obstacle jumps. There is a fork after the first
jump, a side path to the right, but entering and then leaving
it involves making sharp right turns that can cost precious seconds.

[2.6] Epilogue
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story:

 Donald:

This isn't right! How could I not
come first? I have the best horse
 that money can buy!

This competition is a fraud! This
 is...

 Sue:

 Enough. You lost fair and
 square. Now you must honour
your part of the best and free all
 the horses that you've captured.

 Donald:

I won't do anything! You... you
must have cheated! There was no
 way you could beat me.

 Mr. Clifford:

 Donald.

 Donald:

 Father! These country folk think
 they can trick our family!

 Mr. Clifford:

I already know all about it.

 Donald:

And what will you do about it?

 Mr. Clifford:

Me? You must do what's right.
 Stop marring our family name
 and honour the promise you
 made to this girl.

 Donald:

Oh, all right! You can have all
those silly animals you love so
much. I don't want to see
 another horse or these stupid
hills ever again in my life!

 Sue:

Good. That's what I wanted to
 hear.

(Sue automatically returns to Golden Pines.)

 Thelma:

 Congratulations Sue! The race
 was amazing!

 Tim:

 Everyone was very impressed,
 including your Aunt and me.

 Sue:

Thanks! I'm very happy to have
 beaten Donald.

 Tim:

Yes, it's a good thing he is gone
 for good.

 Thelma:

 All the horses captured by
 Donald have been released.
Donald will not be able to hurt
 them ever again.

 Tim:

You should be proud of what
 you've done, Sue.

 Sue:

 I'm very happy, but I couldn't
have done it without the leader
of the herd of wild horses. We
 have worked as a team.

 Tim:

Speak of the devil, look! Here he
 comes.

 Thelma:

How did he take off his saddle?

 Sue:

 Never mind. I thought this
 would happen.

 It's been a pleasure working
 with you. Without your help
 Donald would have won.

Are you leaving right away? I
 understand. Take care and look
 after the herd.

 Tim:

 He's gone.

 Thelma:

Maybe, but I doubt that this is
the last time we see them.

 Sue:

 They'll be happier roaming free
in the wild. As for us, let's
 celebrate!

 Thanks for playing!

Movie:

Sue waves after the wild herd leader as he gallops off into the sunset.
 Awesome!

Diary:

 Now that Donald's
 gone peace has come
 back into our lives.
 At last I can ride
 carefree!

[3] Free Ride Mode
==============================================================================

To access Free Ride Mode with Sue's personal horse, on the
Area Select Map Screen for Appletree Hills, go to the woods
 at the east.

To access Free Ride Mode with an extra horse, complete all of
the Training Exercises with the horse, and then, at his Stall,
 choose the riding cap icon.

In Free Ride Mode, Sue may wander about in the wooded countryside just
outside the town at her leisure, taking in the scenery, obtaining a few
bonus items, and simply enjoying riding. The dog she adopts will follow
her everywhere, but he will automatically bark and race ahead to any
nearby items. Sue will also keep cycling between the message about
replaying the Riding Tutorial and a comment that is associated with
the current Area she is exploring.

There are two ways to return to Appletree Hills. One way is to tap the
lower right Whistle Icon and then tap the Home Icon. (This two-step process
prevents any accidental immediate return. Waiting too long to tap the
Home Icon will cause it to revert to the Whistle Icon.) The other way
is to use the Pause Menu. Any items that Sue grabs are safely retained.

 Sue:

Press SELECT if you want to
 review riding lessons.

The starting Area. Waving Fields is a relatively open place that is
rectangular in layout and easy to navigate. The north path leads to
Rustlers Forest, while the east path leads to Rocky Area.

 Sue:

Waving Fields is a very relaxing
 place.

Rustlers Forest:

A wooded Area with pleasant scenery. Rustlers Forest has a wall forming
a side path on the west and an impassable section of river at the south
east. The north path leads to Riverside, while the south path leads
back to Waving Fields. The east path (secluded at the north east corner
with the gate-like passageways formed by fallen tree trunks) leads to
Hidden Valley, but only after Sue discovers that place in the story.

 The forest is mysterious and
 beautiful at the same time.

Riverside:

Another wooded Area where the course of water continues. Riverside has
a denser layout of trees, but the shallow section of river along the
east may be traversed, and a small cabin can be found in the middle.
This is also the only Area that Sue doesn't need to visit in the story.
The north path leads to Rocky Area, while the south path leads back
 to Rustlers Forest.

Riverside is a great place to cool

its S-shaped layout. The north path leads back to Waving Fields, while the
south path leads back to Riverside.

Hidden Valley:

A wonderful Area that is rumored to exist but has never been seen before
by any person, and the place where the wild horses mentioned in the local
fables are said to reside. Hidden Valley can be reached only after Sue
discovers it in the story. It's actually a dead end, but it has the most
interesting terrain, with switchback-like slopes that may be climbed by
crisscrossing the river. The south path leads back to Rustlers Forest.

 Sue:

 I still can't believe I found the

Ener-G: Horse Riders (DS) (2008) (Developer: Virtual Toys and Lexis Numerique)
A horse caretaking and riding game that features a relaxed yet comprehensive
treatment of the subject. Its controls are based almost entirely on the
Touch Screen yet also support the traditional buttons for most parts.
There are no customization options for the heroine, but horses and
collectible items can be traded with friends.

Ener-G: Dance Squad (DS) (2008) (Developer: Lexis Numerique)
A dance game that features modular sets of reflex challenges of varying
difficulty. Its controls are based almost entirely on the Touch Screen.
There are few customization options for the heroine, but collectible items
 can be traded with friends.

Ener-G: Gym Rockets (DS) (2008) (Developer: 1st Playable Productions)
A gymnastics game that features a Player-created heroine and a gentle
yet flexible style of action. Its controls are based almost entirely
on the Touch Screen. There are many customization options for the heroine,
and the action focuses less on the challenge and more on the aesthetics
 of the sport.

Ener-G (Flash) (2008) (www.ener-ggame.com) (ener-g.us.ubi.com)
An interactive collection of information about Ubisoft's Ener-G series.
For Gym Rockets, there is a balancing game where the Mouse Cursor is
used to help the gymnast remain upright as she automatically travels
back and forth across the beam. For Dance Squad, there is a sound mixer
where four switches can be toggled on and off to change the music and
the lighting effects. For Horse Riders, there is apparently no special
activity available. The lobby displays two more doors for additional
entries that have never been created, and the map reveals an upper floor
with three doors that are otherwise out of view. (This site has been closed
 in the midsummer of 2019.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[5.3] Really Small Details That Make Little Girls Believe in Unicorns
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Confused Rider
Due to scripting glitches, the Diary displays the incorrect entries at
certain parts of the story. During the time when the Training Exercises
have to be entirely completed with Sue's personal horse, it reads,
"I think I will go for a walk with my horse to cool off." This entry
isn't supposed to appear until after Sue wins the first standard Race
and meets Donald. During the time when the Practice Race has to be
completed with the wild herd leader (before the final Race), it reads,
"I've got to find a lead that will help me find the herd of wild horses
before he does." This entry is supposed to stop appearing after the
 leader joins Sue.

Spaced-Out Rider
If Sue's personal horse is given a name that has the maximum length
of 10 characters, there may be a glitch where an empty space will
appear after the name whenever it occurs in the dialogue. This problem
may not matter much, because the horse's name isn't used again after
the introductory parts of the game.

Doggie Rider
Sue adopts the dog early in the story, and she promises Thelma that she
will take good care of him. We know that this game is primarily about
horses, but while it goes as far as having Sue shovel horse shit, it
never shows her feeding, picking up after, or playing with her dog.

Hostile Rider
Sue and Tim crudely refer to the dastardly Donald as a "foreigner,"
but such a xenophobic attitude is nonsensical in light of the
equestrian arts having such a wide, international following.
A more appropriate term would be "outsider," although calling
Donald a rude, lying, selfish jerk is far more apt.

Dark Rider
In the prerendered Movies, despite what Melinda tells Sue, the
wild herd leader isn't black as much as he is dark brown, lol.

Elite Rider
Sue working with the wild herd leader sounds really cool at first, but what
about Sue's personal horse? The game seems to teach that no matter how much
a girl bonds with her own best friend, in the end, when things matter most,
she will ditch him to ride instead with the badass dark horse.

Awkward Rider
Free Ride Mode's Rustlers Forest and Rocky Area can use better names.
"Rustlers" is the last thing anyone wants to hear at a farming region,
and "Rocky Area" would be just called a canyon by most people, but
we guess this is what happens when names are assigned by townsfolk
who keep referring to the bad guy as a "foreigner."

Easy Rider
For something that is all about horses, this game never uses words like
"equestrian" and "farrier" anywhere, not even in the Instruction Booklet.

Exclusive Rider
In the prerendered Movies, Sue's personal horse is uniformly brown.
On the Language Select Screen, the horse in the Special Stable
is completely black, resembling the wild herd leader. Either one
doesn't resemble any breed available to Sue at the Horse Market.

Extreme Rider
The Intro Movie shows Sue and her horse leaping over an obstacle in the
open countryside. In Free Ride Mode, they never encounter any logs, rocks,
or other materials that can actually be bypassed with jumps.

Safe Rider
Sue can never get into any accidents. If she makes her horse jump against an
obstacle or a steep edge, the horse will immediately land, stop, and neigh.
Yes, the horses in this game can show more sense than the heroine herself. XD

Ridge Rider
In Race Mode, once Sue reaches Speed Level 2, she can't slow down below
that. Interestingly enough, if Sue somehow manages to turn around and
travel in the wrong direction, there will be a warning indicator consisting
of a flashing red X and loud beeps. The horse won't leap over obstacles
in the wrong direction, automatically stopping at them instead.

Mismatched Rider
The Instruction Booklet refers to Maple's as a supermarket, and the shop
certainly appears to be one on the Area Select Map Screen. However, the
shop on the inside looks like a small, cozy store.

Ball Rider
In Feeding Mode, if the Ball is thrown far enough to the sides, when it
reaches the barn's walls or the fence, it will immediately disappear and
 return to Sue's possession.

Photogenic Rider
In Sue's Room, the Top Screen's background shows a photo of Sue and
her personal horse standing together. The background doesn't change,
so this photo appears even before she meets her horse.

Artistic Rider
In the Diary, the Top Screen's background shows an open page in the book,
where a pleasant sketch in full color of a farmhouse (presumably that of
 Golden Pines) can be seen.

Runner-Up Rider
In the Trophy Collection, the Top Screen's background shows a circular
silver medal that is hidden in the upper right corner, behind the
gold cup, but this medal doesn't resemble any of the ones won from
the Races. Speaking of winning, why does Sue walk away empty-handed
if she places second or third but take home the bronze or silver prize
when she wins in the first, third, and fourth Races? Do the folks of
Appletree Hills understand what bronze, silver, and gold prizes represent?

Immaculate Rider
In the Card Collection, the Cards are slid out of the album to and back
from the Top Screen in the matching directions. Any spare copy of a Card
will also appear neatly offset underneath the first copy.

Krezzy Comparisons
Just for fun, let's compare the heroines across the Ener-G series:
Sue (Virtual Toys' Horse Riders), Kate (Lexis Numerique's Dance Squad),
and the gymnast heroine (1st Playable's Gym Rockets).
